"Barkisland Retain the Paddock Shield in Impressive style"
14/08/16

The Woodfield second XI scored an 80-run victory over Scholes at Chapelgate to add to their success against Honley in the showpiece 12 months ago.

A partnership of exactly 100 between experienced duo David Weston and Jamie Colman was at the heart of the Barkisland win, but they bowled with more accuracy than their hosts to ensure few scares in front of a large crowd.

After skipper Callum Thompson won the toss and elected to bat, Barkisland lost openers Matt Bridges and Matthew Raven with only 18 on the board and, by the time they reached 47, the dangerous Ben Westbrook (28) and Ben Jobson had joined them back in the pavilion.

That’s when Weston – a former Scholes captain, Sykes Cup and Byrom Shield winner – and Colman (last season’s successful skipper) got to work to pull the innings around, punishing anything loose.

In just short of 23 overs they took the score up to 147 at which point Colman was run out for 47 by Yorkshire Under 15 captain James Wharton, after facing 73 deliveries and hitting nine boundaries.

When Weston was the eighth man out at 183-8, caught behind by Richard Holmes – who won the Shield with Broad Oak 35 years ago – he had scored 57 off 92 balls with 10 fours, and he’d given the visiting attack something to bowl at.

Charlie Cocking (29, including a four and two sixes) and wicketkeeper Paul Dawson (15) then added valuable insurance at the end and Barkisland posted 218 all out in 49.2 overs.

Openers Eden Pearson and Mark Floyd were the best of the Scholes bowlers with three for 50 and two for 39 respectively, while former Huddersfield Town footballer Duane Holmes, skipper Matthew Boorman, Josh Langfield and another ex-Town man, Ian Bray, all had a wicket apiece.

Scholes started steadily in reply, losing opener Jordan Saville at 23 and Jack Bryson at 43.

But they then lost three for 15, including opener Wharton for 19, to be in a fair amount of trouble at 58-5.

Floyd and Duane Holmes then pulled things around with a gutsy partnership of 65, and Floyd looked like putting his side right back in the hunt when he was caught in the deep, after firing 47 off 36 deliveries, including five fours and two sixes.

Holmes (18 including three fours) went almost immediately, however, and when Pearson and Langfield departed shortly afterwards, it was all over – Scholes dismissed for 138 in 39.4 overs.

Westbrook led the attack superbly, finishing with two for 16 in his 10, while Ashley Muncaster had two for 31, Thompson one for 15, Cocking three for 28 in seven and Coleman the other for 19, also off seven.
